Pages 129-130

Gauguin's original name for this painting was Pigs. There is one in the foreground, one in the background, and a Breton woman stripped to the waist. Beautiful painting, but the title doesn't really win over the ladies.


The author, Martin Gayford, suggests this pose was inspired by the woman in Eugène Delacroix's painting The Death of Sardanapalus.
