Vincent thought very highly of the French painter, Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier. He was "the most commercially successful painter in Paris at the time." But Gauguin did not care for him, and Meissonier "was an academic hack as far as most advanced artists were concerned." (Sounds like a 19th-Century Thomas Kinkade.)
