Vincent and Gauguin liked to visit the brothels in Arles (there were six). They saw a fortnightly visit as a matter of hygiene. The brothels were decorated with images from the French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Gauguin liked the brothels but detested Bouguereau. I had never heard of him, but apparently he liked to paint the ladies.
Images like these in a brothel are kind of like hanging up pictures of milk and bread in the grocery store.
